The Eastern Cape is a province that forms the southeast part of South Africa (Figure 1). Bhisho is the capital of the province, while its two largest cities are Port Elizabeth and East London.

It was formed out of the "independent" homelands of Transkei and Ciskei, as well as the eastern portion of the Cape Province (Figure 2).

The Eastern Cape Province covers an area of just over 169,000km˛, with a total population of 6,562,052 (2011 Census - Population Group) and is divided into the following (Click on a heading to show additional information):

It is politically ruled by the African National Congress under the leadership of the Honourable Premier, Phumulo Masualle.

Historically, the province is the landing place and home of the 1820 settlers. It is also a birthplace of the many South African great leaders, such as Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Oliver Tambo, Steve Biko, and Charles Coghlan amongst others.
